What is Anaesthesia?

Anaesthesia is a controlled chemically induced state of unconsciousness. It is a reversible process, likened to sleep, where a patient's responses to a surgical stimulus are ablated by a combination of drugs.

During anaesthesia a patient has NO awareness of their surroundings and has no physiological response to surgical stimuli.
