What are the Causes of SIADH?

There are many causes of inappropriately high levels of ADH to be released into the blood. There have been no reported cases of excess ADH levels resulting from a tumour in the posterior pituitary. A list of the different causes of excess ADH secretion is given below.

Tumours

  • Small cell carcinoma of the lung
  • Prostate
  • Pancreas
  • Thymus
  • Lymphoma

Pulmonary Lesions

  • Tuberculosis
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Aspergillosis
  • Pneumonia
  • Lung abscess

CNS Disease

  • Meningitis
  • Head injury
  • Tumours
  • Subarachnoid/subdural haemorrhage
  • Cerebral thrombosis/haemorrhage
  • SLE vasculitis
  • Cerebral abscess
  • Guillian-Barre syndrome
  • Acute intermittent porphyria

Endocrine Disease

  • Hypopituitarism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hypoadrenalism

Drugs

  • Chlorpropamide
  • Phenytoin
  • Clofibrate
  • Vincristine
  • Cyclophosphamide
  • Carbamazepine

Other Causes

  • Postoperative
  • Hepatic cirrhosis
  • Alcohol withdrawal
