What types of operation are there?

There are basically two different types of operation that can be performed on the pituitary gland. The first type of operation is undertaken by craniotomy. This type of operation involves opening the dura and retracting the brain to access the pituitary. This type of operation is performed using a transcranial approach. The other type of operation is conducted from a plane below the skull base, for example through the sphenoid sinus.
